JULY WEEKENDER | GRUB

Holly: Oh Courtney I really like it!

Its been months and months of Instagram stalking, train closures, and weeping over what to eat first:

but we finally made it.

Our first port of call was actually our old reliable - Spitalfields, and after living in regret for a month and a half, we were on a determined mission to seek out the 'Bread Ahead Bakery School' stand and drop a few pennies.

Get in there gurl.

They have a selection of around 6 flavours of donuts, brownies and other goodies, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you what else was on offer because my fixation on the donuts was that strong.

It was only around 1 o'clock when we arrived and the selection had seemed to already have taken a good bashing! Amongst the array on offer, you had a praline, a salted caramel and honeycomb, a vanilla custard, another one of which I cant remember, and then the one I went for, as recommended after an informed donut discussion with a very attractive gentleman - Chocolate velvet.

Can you believe I almost forgot to take a photo of it?! - that's how you know it was special.

I'm going to resist the urge to ramble on using superlatives that feel insufficient but all I will say is;

  1. It was worth tracking them down
  2. It was worth more than £2.50.
  3. It was the best donut I've ever had.

Now onto the main event.

Although the sun wasn't beaming in our eyes, the ideal summer hotspot that is the Dinerama terrace still looked amazing in all its quirky, recycled glory. The sign has such synonymity, and the whole venue is just so originally designed - its like nothing I've seen before. So cool, man. So cool.

We were both adamant in the fact that we were going to try ribs, and its safe to say, when you end up experiencing what we did in the photo below - perseverance is a beautiful thing.

I say this with no exaggeration or dramatisation:

Best ribs I've ever had.

We could hardly talk to eachother: infact, If I recall correctly, the only words exchanged during the consumption of the image above were - 'Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.'

@smokestakUK

These ribs were bursting at the seams with meat, just when you thought you'd eaten it all off the bone - there was another mouthful waiting for you round the other side. The meat itself was so soft and flavoursome, didn't get buried in-between your teeth, and was in no way tough or stringy. They weren't slathered in sauce either - because they simply didn't need to be. Dusted off with a sprinkling of sea salt that greeted your tongue at the end of every other bite. Amazing.

It cost £8 for 2 ribs, we shared and had a rib each - but we both said that it could easily fill you up if you had two ribs to yourself. I urge you to try these if your a rib lover, or just want to experience some undeniable quality.

Because of the prior pork invasion, we weren't feeling anything too meaty for round 2, so we scoured the stands and had many discussions, and eventually came to the conclusion that we'd head over to Fundi Pizza, which was nestled nonchalantly in the corner.

Beautifully thin, floury and saucy - Fundi Pizza have down to a 'T'.

(or should I say - 'P')

@FundiPizza

We went for the pepperoni and it was, to be succinct - utterly delicious. Don't let your eyes fool your belly into thinking that its not going to fill you up due to its wafer thin base! It leaves you feeling full without providing you with that horrid food baby cradling your abdomen. So very fresh and light, with a stone-baked quality that gives it that authentic flavour; something unattained by Pizza Hut and Papa Johns.

I couldn't recommend it enough!

We shared our pizza, and combined with our ribs, it well and truly finished us off!

With the ribs costing us £4 each, and our pizza £3.50 each - it turned out we had only spent £7.50 on dinner! Only £7.50 for this amazing, flavoursome, top quality, fresh food - unbelievable! Not only are you spending substantially less than you would at a restaurant, but you are helping out the little guy, and experiencing some of the best food London has to offer.

SO, GET OUT AND GO!
